Dear Editor,Congratulations to Volda Lawrence for becoming the Chairman of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR).Now, with Ms Lawrence being seen as a potential future presidential candidate in addition to being a current Cabinet member, and being now the second most powerful person in the PNCR, she needs to send clear messages to the Guyanese nation that she has no problem with apologising for wrong things said or done.Such a gesture would be indicative of her mature and people-centred leadership and suggest that Ms. Lawrence is ready to be a leader of empathy and caring concern. Thus Ms Lawrence should:1. Apologise to the nation in general, and females in particular, for referring to rape as ‘deflowering’. After all, rape — especially of children — is a heinous crime that now carries the death sentence in some nations, and that often leaves lifetime trauma in its wake.2. Apologise to the nation, and especially children, for saying that sexual molestation of children is a ‘family matter’. The fact is that the rape of our children should be everyone’s concern, and should be treaated with utmost seriousness every which way, including legally.Indeed, Ms Lawrence has created history by her ascension to the chairmanship of the PNC. Now she needs to create history by proving that she is a leader who has no qualms about apologising for seeming to condone and/or water down the most horrible of crimes against the nation’s most vulnerable citizens – our children.Madam Chairman, please rise to the level of leadership demanded of your position. Prove to the nation that you are big and strong and humble enough to say ‘sorry’.Sincerely,Annan Boodram
A city businessman is now counting his losses after a fire razed the upper flat of his four-storey premises on Robb Street, Georgetown on Friday morning.According to A Division (Georgetown-East Bank Demerara) Commander, Clifton Hicken, the fire started just around 09:00h on Robb Street, between Camp and Alexander Streets. He noted that the area was immediately cordoned off so as to allow the Guyana Fire Service the necessary space to extinguish the fire.Fire Fighters trying to contain the blaze in the upper flat of the burning buildingSpeaking with Guyana Times, the owner of a nearby business, Jab Rahaman, related that three men were using a welding machine on the upper flat of the four-storey building at the time when the fire started. This newspaper was told that the generator which was being used to power the machine suffered a short circuit and burst into flames. However, Rahaman stated that instead of extinguishing the fire, the three men who were reportedly working, ran away from the scene.“When the smoke start come through the ceiling then everybody get to understand is a fire, then I get a call and I came down,” he said, while noting that upon arrival, he immediately turned off the power in his business.Up to Friday afternoon, the three men who were allegedly present when the fire began have not yet been identified. Also present at the scene was Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan. There were no reported injuries. An investigation has been launched.
– boat with over 4000 crabs, clothes & other items foundThe hunt is on for four young Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) men reportedly missing in neighbouring Suriname after leaving home more than a week ago on a crab-catching expedition. The missing men have been identified as: Yogeshwar Mangal, also called “Bouyo”, of Number Two Village, East Canje; Nelson Dejonge, 22, of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme; Ramdat Goonraj, 23, also called “Azad”, of Rose Hall Town, and Anand Deoharry of Cumberland, East Canje.Guyana Times understands that the men’s boat with their belongings was found washed up on a remote beach in Nickerie, Suriname on Saturday. The men reportedly left home on December 1, 2019 for Nickerie and were expected back the following day. After not hearing from the crab catchers for more than one week, family members formed a search party and went to the Dutch-speaking country in search of the missing men. This newspaper was told that a five-member search party went across the Corentyne River in a small boat and was able to locate the crab catchers’ boat that was found abandoned along with the engine, gasoline, and the catch of thousands of crabs.According to Milton Persaud, a relative of one of the missing men, at the time of the discovery of the boat, it was stuck on the bank of a river. Persaud could not name the river, but said from all indications, the missing men had removed their clothes and might have left on foot to get help.“When we see the boat, we feel nice that we find them and we say that we gon anchor the boat and bring them over and then go back for the crab; but when we reach the boat – nobody inside,” he explained.Initial investigations seem to suggest that the boat might have got grounded on the river bank as a result of the tide, so the crab catchers probably abandoned it and went inland. This publication was told, however, that it could take the men days before they find any residential area.“We don’t know how near people living, but we just suggesting that it might take them two days to meet people and that is if they don’t get lost … If they had walked on the beach, we would have seen them,” Persaud related.Relatives believe that the young men only left to get help on Saturday.According to Persaud, this is based on the fact that many dead crabs were seen around the boat.“It look like they throw out all the dead crab Saturday and leave the rest there in the boat and then go away,” he said.Persaud disclosed that the search party examined the area extensively, but found nothing other than evidence the four crab catchers and their “good clothes” were missing.Meanwhile, the matter has been reported to the Police at Springlands. However, Persaud has expressed concern that the Police seemed to be more interested in getting the height of the missing men rather than getting assistance to go in search of the crab catchers, who are out in the elements and at risk of becoming dehydrated.

Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Dee Jepsen and Shoshanah InwoodNational Rural Health Day was Thursday November 21, 2019. This day brings attention to the unique challenges rural communities face when it comes to health services and healthy people. Each year, the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health selects a topic to organize its efforts and creates awareness for health care services. The 2019 theme is: Plug into the power of rural. Ohio has rural health deficitsWhen it comes to health care services, 50% of Ohio counties are designated as Governor’s certified shortage areas. There are 44 counties, or regions within counties, considered underserved.Rural communities do not see the same health advancements as urban counties. Residents within rural areas face accessibility issues and an overall lack of providers. Access to ambulatory and emergency medical services are especially critical in rural America, where the majority of trauma deaths occur. The opioid crisis can also affect rural communities’ need for first-responder services.Rural residents are typically an aging population suffering from a greater number of chronic conditions, and a large percentage of rural Americans are uninsured or underinsured when it comes to health care.Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates rural areas have a 50% higher rate of unintentional injuries than in urban areas. There are increased injuries from falls, motor vehicle crashes and drug overdoses.A past article from the National Conference of State Legislatures, offers several options for improving conditions in rural communities. A policy associate, Charlie Severance-Medaris, suggests these approaches. Focusing on health care workforce recruitment and retention — Many rural communities struggle to attract and retain health care professionals, especially behavioral and mental health care providers. Addressing these shortages is a key strategy for improving access to health care and preventive services for people in rural areas. Strengthening disease prevention, screening and treatment efforts — Prevention programs and screenings can help early detection and treatment of heart disease, cancer and chronic lower respiratory diseases. Supporting healthier behaviors and neighborhoods — Tobacco use and obesity are significant risk factors within rural communities that contribute to the overall health of the residents. The leading causes of death associated with tobacco use and obesity are heart disease, cancer, stroke and chronic respiratory disease. Improving health coverage — Rural Americans would seek health care if additional consideration were given to make health insurance more affordable or increase the number of service providers in the area. Continuing efforts to prevent opioid overdose deaths — Many states have identified the need and put programs in place to reduce the effects of drug addiction and abuse. Expanding telehealth services — Telehealth can extend the reach of health care into rural areas by providing over the phone counseling, diagnosis of certain medical conditions and remote pharmacy/prescription services. State office to support rural healthOhio has a State Office of Rural Health, which serves as the anchor of information and support for rural communities. They advocate strengthening health care delivery systems through their resources and programs, and encourage recruitment and retention of health professionals in rural areas. Their website answers questions and offers additional information to help leverage partnerships locally, statewide and nationally. Visit https://odh.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odh/know-our-programs/state-office-of-rural-health. The Ohio State University initiatives to support rural healthThe College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences hosted a day-long interactive forum for individuals and organizations in both the health and agriculture sectors to come together and discuss health care issues. Participants were encouraged to explore the ways in which health, access to health care and health insurance affect the health and vitality of Ohio’s farmers and Ohio’s rural and farm economy. This event was based on the findings of the national USDA funded project “Health Insurance Rural Economic Development and Agriculture” (HIREDnAg). Additional information on the ways in which access to health care and health insurance affects economic development and quality of life in the farm sector see: www.hirednag.net.Forum activities examined the ways personal, family and community health affect the vitality of farming enterprises, and also the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of our rural communities. Participants from around the state came together to forge new partnerships and identify projects, programs and policies that will strengthen the health and vitality of Ohio’s farm sector. Ohio State offered $10,000 in mini-grants to individuals and organizations to implement projects developed during the forum, and awardees will be announced later in November. The power of ruralNational Rural Health Day brings awareness to the health-related issues so prevalent in rural areas. A special website (www.PowerofRural.org) has been established for rural health stakeholders to explore national resources. Highlights of this page are a partnership pledge and a toolkit for advocacy. There is also a showcase of individuals and organizations selected as their 2019 Community Stars. In the nation and in Ohio, rural health care is a critical topic. The one-day celebration of National Rural Health Day allows individuals and organizations to rally behind the valuable services provided to the rural communities. Collectively these activities are designed to improve the quality of life for rural Americans and sustain our rural communities as wonderful places to live and work.

The Nassau Airport Development Company, NAD, confirmed plans to implement enhanced security measures for all commercial flights to the United States. This means that travelers to the US will have to arrive at least an estimated three hours before departure time. The changes apply more to passengers traveling with electronics larger than a mobile phone whether the device is within their carry on or check-in luggage. The move comes after US Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly announced last month enhanced security measures for international flights into the US.Some 104 countries including The Bahamas has been impacted by the new security measures. In its statement, the Nassau Airport Development says it expects the majority of these changes at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) to fall under the purview of the Airport Authority (AA) and the airlines that service US destinations.NAD is also asking passengers to stay connected to the airport and their airlines with social media for important updates.#MagneticMediaNews#AddedSecurityOnUSboundFlightsJuly18th2017 Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp
Former winger Mario Basler has advised Luka Jovic against pursuing a transfer to either Barcelona or Real Madrid. The 21-year-old forward has enjoyed a sensational second stint on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt this season and leads the Bundesliga scoring charts with 14 goals in 20 appearances.Jovic’s eye-catching progress in Germany has reportedly captured the interest of La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, while Premier League side Chelsea and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have also been linked. It’s understood that Frankfurt plan to take up their buy option on Jovic this summer for just €6m and will then allegedly make him available for sale with an asking price of €60m.Although reports indicate that bids in the region of €35m are more likely to be offered instead for Jovic’s signature, who is “honoured” by the strong interest in him.But Basler, who won two Bundesliga titles at Bayern between 1996 to 1999, has advised the young Serbian that staying at Frankfurt may be the best option for his career.La Liga Betting: Match-day 4 Stuart Heath – September 14, 2019 Despite it being very early into La Liga season, both Barcelona and Real Madrid have had unprecedented starts to their campaigns. It could ruin his career.”After graduating through the youth ranks at Serbian side Red Star Belgrade, who famously defeated Liverpool 2-0 in the Champions League earlier this season, Jovic joined Benfica in February 2016 but struggled to make his mark in Portugal. The Serbia international has since spent the last two years over at Frankfurt and has found the net 22 times in 42 Bundesliga matches.FRANKFURT AM MAIN, GERMANY – OCTOBER 19: Luka Jovic of Eintracht Frankfurt (8) celebrates as he scores his team’s seventh goal and his fifth during the Bundesliga match between Eintracht Frankfurt and Fortuna Duesseldorf at Commerzbank-Arena on October 19, 2018 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
