The women delivered apetition to the then Prime Minister, JG Strijdom, against carrying a pass book, referred to as a dom pass in Afrikaans, meaning “dumb pass”. They also marched against the degradation of African women. This Women’s Day marked the 60th anniversary of the march. The monument also includes a leadership development and training centre, anddedicated walls for murals, artworks and artefacts that tell the stories of women’sstruggles throughout the South Africa’s history.Susan Shabangu, the Minister of Women in the Presidency, said the event wasan emotional reflection on what women have done to take the country from whereit was to where it is today.“Women once more are gathered here to witness the opening of the livingmonument, where people can see the contribution of women across colour lines,”the minister said in her presentation.Shabangu asked women, particularly young women, to visit the monument inorder to reflect and inform their destiny, adding that “the women of the 1956 marchplayed their role and today we have a Constitution which includes what womenfought for”.She said it is up to the young South African women of today to protect theConstitution and ensure human rights, especially women’s rights, are not violated.Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, African Union Commission chairpersonNkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and the last surviving march leader De Bruyn, wereamong those who attended the unveiling and toured the monument.Sophie De Bruyn standing next to her statue unveiled at Lillian NgoyiSquare #TellHerStory #WomensDay pic.twitter.com/xpYIflHZK4— SAGov News (@SAgovnews) August 9,2016De Bruyn told EWN News that the monument and recognition of the struggle ofwomen during apartheid gave her great joy, particularly seeing how far womenhave come in advancing their rights since 1956.“Today when I see what they’ve achieved, they’ve achieved a lot. They canchoose their own professions, they can choose anything they want to do, and I oftensay to them that it’s no longer a case of the sky being the limit. But you can gobeyond the sky because you can even become an astronaut.”#WomensDay2016 These women were among the thousands whomarched on August 9 1956. She feltproud that she had been a small part of bringing change to the country. However, while commending the interventions made by democracy to empower black people, Motlolometsi said that women and, especially elderly women, were not fully liberated yet.Motlolometsi hopes there will be more efforts made by the country to unite, respect and liberate the nation’s women.Source: South African Government News Agency Southafrica.info reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SouthAfrica.info material
With drought an ever present threat, the City of Cape Town has approved plans to build a plant to turn salty sea water into potable water. The City of Cape Town is building its first desalination plant in the V&A Waterfront to deal with the ongoing drought. (Image: Construction Review)Sulaiman PhilipVisitors to Cape Town this festive season will arrive as the Mother City struggles through the worst drought in living memory. At present dams supplying the city stand at 35% capacity, but without any rains the levels will be closer to 25% by December.Minister of local government‚ environmental affairs and development planning in the Western Cape, Anton Bredell, says the province has been managing drought conditions in some parts of the region since 2010. “Three years of below-average rainfall have exacerbated the situation and despite proactive measures like the implementation of water restrictions and programmes to clear the Berg River of alien vegetation‚ the reality is we are faced with a dire situation.”Inspired by the Target 140 Campaign implemented in South East Queensland, Australia, Cape Town embarked on reducing water usage. So far residents’ water usage has dropped below 100 litres per person per day, making the City’s Water Conservation and Water Demand Management Programme one of the most successful water conservation projects globally – a fact recognised at the 2015 C40 Cities Awards in Paris.Mayor Patricia de Lille thanked Capetonians and commended them “for rising to the occasion to save more water in our City because we are determined that we will not allow a well-run City to run out of water”.The mayor told the media the City will run out of water by March next year, at current usage levels. Despite water restrictions and the water savings achieved, Cape Town still needs 450 megalitres of water a day. With no end to the drought in sight, the City has approved plans to build a desalination plant to turn salty sea water into potable water.Construction will begin in December at the V&A Waterfront, the first approved site. By February the plant will feed two million litres of water into municipal networks. The harbour site will allow the City to draw water from the harbour and pump the salt brine residue into the ocean. As David Green, V&A Waterfront chief executive officer, explained: “At peak we have about 7m tidal waves, which means that there is no issue in terms of marine life, the brine is cleared immediately.”The V&A plant is the first of a possible eight the City wants to build. Down from an original 17, the other sites include Dido Valley‚ Granger Bay, Harmony Park, Hout Bay‚ Monwabisi, Strand and Strandfontein. The plants will have a working life of two years and, it is hoped, will supply the City with up to 15 million litres of usable water a day. Nation to Nation The Inquiry dominated the morning session at the Assembly of First Nations special chief’s assembly Thursday.Inquiry Chief Commissioner Marion Buller gave a presentation, noting that more work needs to be done. And how she will initiate a plan to formally ask the federal government for more time and money, at least a two year extension. After her presentation, Buller heard sharp criticism from the floor microphones.“There’s a stark reality between the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and this national inquiry on missing and murdered women,” said Judy Wilson of the Neskonlith First Nation in British Columbia.“Why?” she asked. “Was it about the money? Was it about the organization or is it about how it’s being led?”“It is nothing but a gong show, a circus show,” said Jocelyn Wabano-Iahtail, whose daughter was killed in 2001.Manitoba Keewatinowi Okamakanak Grand Chief Sheila North was even more pointed in her comments.“I have to tell you and I’m kind of repulsed that you’re actually here because in the summertime you didn’t even acknowledge our concerns,” she said.“We saw a commission that is falling apart and is not doing the work that the women and children and men fought for,” North continued. “And I’m sorry to say that but I think you have to go. You need to step down to salvage this inquiry.”North explained further to Nation to Nation host Todd Lamirande why she wants Buller to step down.“She seems cold. She seems like she’s leading by her head and she should be leading by her heart.”After Buller’s departure the chiefs in assembly voted in favour of a resolution to support the Inquiry’s attempt to seek an extension and an amendment to the resolution called on Buller to step down. You can subscribe to the Nation To Nation podcast below:
Former Ohio State basketball coach Jim O’Brien has been hired by Emerson College, a Division III school in Boston, to the same position. “We are extremely excited to have attracted someone with Jim’s talent and experience to Emerson. He will help the basketball program build on its many past successes,” said Kristin Parnell, athletic director at Emerson College, in an email to The Lantern. Hank Smith, who coached the Emerson basketball program for the past 16 seasons, left the program to “pursue other interests,” according to a Jan. 21 statement. Emerson finished with a record of 10-16 last season. O’Brien has lived in Boston, where he played basketball at Boston College, since being fired from OSU in 2004. He also coached at Boston College before coming to OSU. O’Brien was fired from OSU on June 8, 2004, after he admitted to giving a recruit, Aleksandar Radojevic, $6,000 in cash. Emerson does not award athletic scholarships. O’Brien was replaced by current coach Thad Matta. Matta did not return multiple attempts for comment.

He and his family found out about the illness earlier this week, and the rest of the team was notified Tuesday before its trip to Louisville, Ky., for a game against Louisville Wednesday.OSU lost that game, 7-3.Farmer appeared in 10 games this season for the Buckeyes and had a 6-4 record to go along with a 3.28 ERA. He was second to senior pitcher Greg Greve with nine starts this season, while Greve has made 11 starts.“The team as a whole is obviously concerned about their brother, but we will forge on in our mission,” Beals said.OSU (25-20, 6-9) is scheduled to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes (25-15, 7-8) Saturday at Bill Davis Stadium.
