A 25-year-old man is now dead after the vehicle in which he was travelling turned turtle on the roadway before slamming into a fence after its driver lost control while attempting to overtake another car in a street race.Dead is Leroy Cummings of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE). Meanwhile, the driver of the now damaged vehicle has been identified as 23-year-old Totaram Munishwar, also of Tuschen, EBE. The other two passengers, one of whom is Cummings’ younger brother, were treated at the hospital and sent away.Reports are that Cummings along with his brother and two of their friends were imbibing at a popular sports bar on the EBE. This newspaper was told that the men met other friends there, all of whom were travelling in the other vehicle that Munishwar was attempting to overtake when the accident occurred.Reports are that around 00:30h on Monday, the quartet was in Munishwar’s vehicle, (PVV 4886) along the De Kinderen Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), trailing behind their friends in the other car, PMM 4818, which was being driven by 20-year-old Saeed Alli.According to reports, the two drivers reportedly began to race. However, as they approached a turn, Munishwar attempted to overtake his friend’s vehicle while another vehicle was approaching from the opposite direction.The bright lights of the approaching vehicle allegedly caused Munishwar to swerve from colliding but in doing so, he lost control of his vehicle, which turned turtle and then ended up crashing into a fence.A police source close to the investigation told this newspaper that the driver and occupants from PVV 4886 were immediately pulled out of the mangled car and rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, WCD.However, Cummings arrived there in an unconscious state and due to his serious condition at that time, he was referred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. However he died while on the way to the WDRH.The police source also told this publication that both drivers were tested for alcohol and results revealed that their levels were above the legal limit. The two drivers are presently in police custody as the investigation continues.
