Paige Aspinwall (Dayton, Minn.) continued to guide the offense with 37 assists.”It’s been a great weekend for hte Bulldogs to get off to a 2-0 start in the conference,” said Drake head coach Darrin McBroom. “Valpo is a very good defensive team, so to come in here tonight and get a three-set win is very good for our young team. We executed our game plan very well, except for a brief period in the third set, but I’m proud that we showed stamina at the end and didn’t let the third set slip away.”Valparaiso (7-7, 0-2 MVC) was led by Taylor Graboski’s 13 kills on 24 attempts. The Bulldogs opened the match by closing the first set on a 4-0 run behind kills from four different players to prevail, 25-23. Drake maintained that lead through the second set in maintaining a comfortable lead in holding off Valpo for the 25-22 win. The third set was more closely contested despite Drake jumping out to a 12-5 lead. However, the Crusaders rallied to tie the match at 24-24. From there the lead changed hands four times with three ties until a kill from Plock and a Valpo error allowed Drake to build the necessary two-point advantage at 29-27 to win the set and sweep the first meeting between Drake and Valparaiso as conference foes. The Bulldogs aim to remain on top of the MVC standings next weekend when they return home to Illinois State and Bradley. However, before returning to Des Moines, the Bulldogs remain in the greater Chicagoland area to visit Chicago State Monday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m.Print Friendly Version Next Game:last_img
