49ers vs. Cardinals: Five keys to winning at home

first_imgHere are five keys to the 49ers (1-3) beating the Arizona Cardinals (0-4) on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium:1. PROTECT C.J.: Already prone to taking big hits, 49ers QB C.J. Beathard will be facing an ultra-aggressive defense. Each of the starting offensive linemen, except left guard Laken Tomlinson, is dealing with an injury, and left tackle Joe Staley is most questionable. Look for two tight-end sets to help. The Los Angeles Rams recover a fumble forced by defensive back Derwin James #33 of the Los …last_img

Tribute to Arthur Goldreich

He was based in Israel at the time.In South Africa Goldreich was best known as one of the founders of the ANC’s military wing – Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) – in 1961.Goldreich and his family lived on the farm Liliesleaf in Rivonia, northern Johannesburg, along with icons like Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu to plan MK’s strategies in secret. Liliesleaf was bought with funds from the Communist Party of South Africa, the Goldreichs posed as the white owners of the estate so as not to raise the suspicions of apartheid authorities. The Spear of the Nation, as Umkhonto we Sizwe is known in English, went on to become an armed struggle force to be reckoned with – even after Mandela, Sisulu and others were arrested and, following the Rivonia Trial, sent to Robben Island as political prisoners.Goldreich was one of 17 freedom fighters arrested during the police raid at Liliesleaf on 11 July 1963 – and he would have become one of the Rivonia trialists had he not made a daring escape from a cell at the Marshall Square Police Station in Johannesburg on 11 August 1963.Goldreich, along with Harold Wolpe, Mosie Moola and Abdulhay Jassat, bribed a guard at the station and then fled the country via Swaziland and Botswana.“We salute his heroic resolve that saw him leave South Africa when he escaped from custody,” said Mthembu.Goldreich returned to Israel in 1964.His first visit back to South Africa was after the democratic elections in 1994, when he attended a reunion at Liliesleaf. The farm has since been turned into a museum.Goldreich is survived by his sons Nicholas, Paul, Amos and Eden.“Arthur Goldreich will go down in history as one of the rare breeds of revolutionaries who changed the course of South African history,” the ANC said.last_img read more

Highlighting rural health

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Dee Jepsen and Shoshanah InwoodNational Rural Health Day was Thursday November 21, 2019. This day brings attention to the unique challenges rural communities face when it comes to health services and healthy people. Each year, the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health selects a topic to organize its efforts and creates awareness for health care services. The 2019 theme is: Plug into the power of rural. Ohio has rural health deficitsWhen it comes to health care services, 50% of Ohio counties are designated as Governor’s certified shortage areas. There are 44 counties, or regions within counties, considered underserved.Rural communities do not see the same health advancements as urban counties. Residents within rural areas face accessibility issues and an overall lack of providers. Access to ambulatory and emergency medical services are especially critical in rural America, where the majority of trauma deaths occur. The opioid crisis can also affect rural communities’ need for first-responder services.Rural residents are typically an aging population suffering from a greater number of chronic conditions, and a large percentage of rural Americans are uninsured or underinsured when it comes to health care.Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates rural areas have a 50% higher rate of unintentional injuries than in urban areas. There are increased injuries from falls, motor vehicle crashes and drug overdoses.A past article from the National Conference of State Legislatures, offers several options for improving conditions in rural communities. A policy associate, Charlie Severance-Medaris, suggests these approaches. Focusing on health care workforce recruitment and retention — Many rural communities struggle to attract and retain health care professionals, especially behavioral and mental health care providers. Addressing these shortages is a key strategy for improving access to health care and preventive services for people in rural areas. Strengthening disease prevention, screening and treatment efforts — Prevention programs and screenings can help early detection and treatment of heart disease, cancer and chronic lower respiratory diseases. Supporting healthier behaviors and neighborhoods — Tobacco use and obesity are significant risk factors within rural communities that contribute to the overall health of the residents. The leading causes of death associated with tobacco use and obesity are heart disease, cancer, stroke and chronic respiratory disease. Improving health coverage — Rural Americans would seek health care if additional consideration were given to make health insurance more affordable or increase the number of service providers in the area. Continuing efforts to prevent opioid overdose deaths — Many states have identified the need and put programs in place to reduce the effects of drug addiction and abuse. Expanding telehealth services — Telehealth can extend the reach of health care into rural areas by providing over the phone counseling, diagnosis of certain medical conditions and remote pharmacy/prescription services. State office to support rural healthOhio has a State Office of Rural Health, which serves as the anchor of information and support for rural communities. They advocate strengthening health care delivery systems through their resources and programs, and encourage recruitment and retention of health professionals in rural areas. Their website answers questions and offers additional information to help leverage partnerships locally, statewide and nationally. Visit https://odh.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odh/know-our-programs/state-office-of-rural-health. The Ohio State University initiatives to support rural healthThe College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences hosted a day-long interactive forum for individuals and organizations in both the health and agriculture sectors to come together and discuss health care issues. Participants were encouraged to explore the ways in which health, access to health care and health insurance affect the health and vitality of Ohio’s farmers and Ohio’s rural and farm economy. This event was based on the findings of the national USDA funded project “Health Insurance Rural Economic Development and Agriculture” (HIREDnAg). Additional information on the ways in which access to health care and health insurance affects economic development and quality of life in the farm sector see: www.hirednag.net.Forum activities examined the ways personal, family and community health affect the vitality of farming enterprises, and also the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of our rural communities. Participants from around the state came together to forge new partnerships and identify projects, programs and policies that will strengthen the health and vitality of Ohio’s farm sector. Ohio State offered $10,000 in mini-grants to individuals and organizations to implement projects developed during the forum, and awardees will be announced later in November. The power of ruralNational Rural Health Day brings awareness to the health-related issues so prevalent in rural areas. A special website (www.PowerofRural.org) has been established for rural health stakeholders to explore national resources. Highlights of this page are a partnership pledge and a toolkit for advocacy. There is also a showcase of individuals and organizations selected as their 2019 Community Stars. In the nation and in Ohio, rural health care is a critical topic. The one-day celebration of National Rural Health Day allows individuals and organizations to rally behind the valuable services provided to the rural communities. Collectively these activities are designed to improve the quality of life for rural Americans and sustain our rural communities as wonderful places to live and work.last_img read more

Hotmail Users, It’s Time To Move To Outlook.com, Like It Or Not

first_imgRelated Posts Tags:#email#Hotmail#Microsoft#Outlook Last July, Microsoft reworked its email system and unveiled Outlook.com, a beta of a dramatically improved email client that it said at the time would eventually replace Hotmail. The Windows 8 style “Metro makeovers” eventually reached SkyDrive, the new Office Web Apps, and a revamped MSN, among other Microsoft propertiess. Although Hotmail and Outlook.com share several elements – social connections to Twitter and Facebook, for example, and the ability to put rich media – including videos – within the client itself, Outlook.com is a bold reimagining of the Web email client in the Windows 8 vein. The Dad ProblemThe problem, unfortunately, is Dad.My father, like many fathers, is a wonderful man. But even though he’s an engineer, he despises technology. He hated beepers. Cell phones. ATM cards. Computers. Since I convinced my mother that a DVR could record Oakland A’s games or St. Mary’s basketball games, they’ve added a (standard-definition) video recoreder, which collects dust under their 27-inch Sony Trinitron CRT television. To their credit, we were one of the early families to adopt the microwave, which still resides in our kitchen, waiting for me to reset the clock in the event of a power failure. My father has an AOL account. My father quite logically points out that he has no need for an additional email address, since that AOL account is now embedded deep in the list of contact of their friends. And, cheapskate that he is (a compliment, in our family) he quickly bailed out of AOL’s dialup service when a better ISP deal came along. But there is no way on God’s green earth that my father wants Windows 8. He’s quite happy with Windows XP, thank you, which chugs along on his old Dell PC. I’m pretty sure he would still be on an ancient version of Internet Explorer had I not upgraded him for fear of him getting hacked. No, my father does not have a Hotmail account, but I suspect that there are plenty of people just like him who do. Shifting from Hotmail to the Outlook.com environment is definitely going to blow some minds. I suspect that after glimpsing the Windows 8 style interface, some people may never venture upon the Internet again.Easing The Transition?I kid, of course.Honestly, I’m sure some users will be blown away by the look and feel of Outlook.com, and the wealth of new features it offers. Some may even feel comfortable enough to upgrade their PCs to finally enter the 21st Century. And give credit where credit is due: Law and Microsoft are definitely trying to make the transition as easy as possible:“Everything from their @hotmail.com email address, password, messages, folders, contacts, rules, vacation replies, etc. will stay the same, with no disruption in service,” Law wrote. “When upgraded, they’ll also get all the benefits from the redesigned Outlook.com experience – a fresh and intuitive user interface, lots of new features and better performance. And we won’t ever make you switch your email address to an @outlook.com address if you don’t want to.”But when I read all that, I still can’t help but think of this quote:“I used to be with it, but then they changed what *it* was. Now what I’m with isn’t *it,* and what’s *it* seems weird and scary to me. It’ll happen to you…” Abe Simpson, The Simpsons: “Homerpalooza”Image source: Flickr/pauldwaite. “OK, people, listen up. Seymour, pay attention. Elsie, turn on your hearing aid. It’s time to move your Hotmail accounts to Outlook.com. Hey! No, stop complaining. Don’t use that language, Ethel, it’s un-ladylike.”Yes, the the time has come – the hundreds of millions of email users who are currently using Hotmail will be migrated over to Outlook.com by this summer, Microsoft said Tuesday. For many of Microsoft’s long-time customers, this will be their first experience with the Windows 8-styled “Metro” user interface that Microsoft is propagating around its properties.(See also Outlook.com: Take A Tour Of Microsoft’s Hotmail Replacement.)“We’ve been very excited by the adoption of the preview and how it’s delivering on our promise of a new, reimagined email service,” David Law, director of product management for Outlook.com, said in a blog post on Tuesday. “Throughout the preview, we learned a tremendous amount from seeing how people used the service.  Early adopters have told us what they liked, what they’d like to see next, and what we needed to do to make more people switch. And we’ve used that to add new features and fine-tune the services to scale.  Now that Outlook.com is coming out of preview, we’ll be kicking off a huge push across a number of countries around the world to drive even greater awareness and adoption of Outlook.com.” Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… markhachmanlast_img read more

Goa Minister on visit to US must call on CM: Congress

first_imgPanaji: The Congress in Goa on Thursday mockingly advised Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar, whose official tour to the US, along with four family members, has sparked a controversy, to at least call on Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in hospital during his visit.“Since Mr. Ajgaonkar has gone on a junket to the US with family members along with some tourism ministry officials, he should at least call on our ailing Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and enquire after his health, considering that no one in Goa has been formally informed about the state of health of our Chief Minister,” Congress spokesperson Urfan Mulla said at a press conference at the party headquarters on Thursday. Another Congress spokesperson Amarnath Panjikar said it was unfair that the minister travels to the US with family members, at a time when the state was reeling under a financial crisis, especially with the mining industry non-functional following directives from the Supreme Court since March.“The government should get reimbursement for the cost incurred on the travel and stay of the family members, once the minister returns,” Mr. Panjikar said. The State Tourism Ministry has said that the Minister is in the US to participate in tourism promotion road shows. Senior Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party(MGP) leader and Public Works Development minister Sudin Dhavalikar recently rushed to the rescue of his ministerial colleague and said that Mr. Ajgaonkar should pay for the cost incurred on the travel and stay of his relatives for the US trip. “There is nothing wrong with family travelling on such trips, as long as state funds are not used. The tourism department can recover the amount from the minister,” Mr. Dhavalikar responded to media reports recently.Mr. Ajgaonkar is one of the three MLAs of MGP, an alliance partner of BJP-led coalition in the State.last_img read more

Syed Kirmani says Ravichandran Ashwin has ‘rightly’ replaced Harbhajan Singh

first_imgOff-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has “rightly” replaced an out-of-form Harbhajan Singh in the Indian Test team as the selectors must have made that decision looking into the future, says former India wicket-keeper Syed Kirmani. The Bangalore-based Kirmani also feels it would be tough for the Punjab bowler to make a comeback into the Test squad, even though he has been picked for the upcoming two Twenty20 matches against New Zealand and the WorldT20 in Sri Lanka.”Ashwin has very rightly taken Harbhajan’s place, and he has been performing with a great amount of consistency. And along with him the other spinners have also done a great job and we have a great batting lineup,” Kirmani, now director of the Karnataka State Cricket Association Academy, told Mail Today in an interview.”But there cannot be a comparison between individuals; everybody has his own technique and style of approach, different attitudes and different applications. There have been a lot of bowling variations which both have been using. Ashwin has come a long way through hard work; not that Bhajji hasn’t worked hard,” he said.Ashwin picked up 18 wickets in two Tests against New Zealand and won the Man-of-the-Series award on Monday as India won the series 2-0.After Harbhajan lost his form and got injured last year and Ashwin, who made his ODI debut in June 2010, made his Test debut against the West Indies in Delhi.Kirmani, 62, pointed out that Ashwin has performed well, bagging wickets consistently and even scoring a Test century.”When there’s no consistency in a plan then the selection committee looks at a younger player who has the same kind of potential, who’s equally competent as the experienced players. So when Bhajji was going through a bad patch last year, obviously, you had to look into the future and look for a replacement,” he said.”It’ll be tough for Harbhajan to stage a comeback at this stage – unless Ashwin goes through a very rough patch all of a sudden. Ashwin looks more compact and a steadier Test player.”Asked who he would pick in the XI if both were in the squad, Kirmani said: “I’d pick both, if they are in form. In my time offspinners Erapalli Prasanna and S Venkatraghavan played in the XI. So there’s nothing wrong in that, if required. But it can only happen in the Indian sub-continent (on spin friendly pitches).”On the transition phase in Indian batting, following the retirement of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, Kirmani said that people should not get disheartened as batsmen like Virat Kohli are performing well. He also said that too much should not be read into New Zealand taking 12-run lead here in the second Test, which India eventually won.”There’s no room for disappointment for anybody becauseyou cannot be in top form all the time; you cannot be hitting centuries in every innings. This is a very natural phenomenon. You cannot have everybody showing the kind of consistency which Kohli is showing. They’re exceptional players,” he said.Kohli scored a century and a half-century in Bangalore to win the Man-of-the-Match award. Kirmani said he’s the most exciting batting prospect at the moment.”Yeah, for sure; there’s no two ways about it. The progress, the temperament, the adjustment and the attitude – in every aspect – he has shown in all forms of the game is huge,” he said. “Right from the time he was in the India under-19 team his graph has been going upwards, climbing the ladders of success and popularity. And the key factor is consistency, which he has also shown. On that basis he’s the most exciting player at the moment.”Kirmani felt that elevating Kohli to vice-captaincy was also appropriate, though he pointed out that the seniors in the team should always be respected.”You’ve got to groom a player, that’s how you encourage a youngster. The vice-captaincy is fair enough and let him get groomed under the experience of Sehwag and Gambhir. At the same time, seniors like Sehwag and Gambhir, have to be respected,” he said. “Dhoni is captain and you cannot touch him at the moment. If Sehwag and Gambhir don’t want to accept captaincy then you come to Kohli. But we don’t know the inside story.”Gambhir has, however, again been appointed vice-captain for this month’s T20 World Cup, replacing Kohli.advertisementlast_img read more
