Olympic gymnastics ex-doctor pleads guilty to sex charges

first_imgKammuri turning to super typhoon less likely but possible — Pagasa “Michigan State University continues to be shocked and appalled by Larry Nassar’s now-admitted criminal conduct,” he said. “Any suggestion that the university covered up this conduct is simply false.”In a statement, U.S. Olympic Committee spokesperson Mark Jones said the organization is “disgusted that these acts occurred, heartbroken for the victims” and “proud of their courage for confronting this tragedy.”Jones also thanked “law enforcement personnel for ensuring (Nassar) is never able to abuse young women again.” Sochi gold medalist among 4 Russians banned for doping The criminal cases against Nassar followed reports last year in The Indianapolis Star about how USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians, mishandled complaints about sexual misconduct involving the doctor and coaches. Women and girls said the stories inspired them to step forward with detailed allegations of abuse. Many of the accusers have sued Michigan State, USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee.“We are more than a year from my police report. Our abuser has pled guilty, but MSU, USAG and the USOC, you have yet to take responsibility for what happened on your watch,” said victim Rachael Denhollander. She said officials kept Nassar in power for decades after ignoring repeated reports of sexual assaults and brushing off the victims as being unable to tell the difference between a medical exam and a sexual violation.John Manly, an attorney for 105 accusers, said the three institutions “miserably failed children,” and he likened what happened with Nassar to the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State University. He criticized an internal review at Michigan State and called for an investigation of university officials by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, whose office is prosecuting Nassar.Women’s gymnastics coach Kathie Klages resigned earlier this year, but others remain on the job.“We’ve never been given the documents either in litigation or anywhere else to show who knew what when,” said Manly, who added that Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon should resign if she does not release an internal report about the scandal. He also said USA Gymnastics officials should be investigated — possibly by an FBI task force — citing laws that require people in certain professions to report suspected child abuse to children’s protective services.USA Gymnastics said in a statement that it was “very sorry that any athlete was harmed by Larry Nassar” and that it fired Nassar and reported him to the FBI after first learning of concerns in 2015. Manly said the organization never informed Michigan State, however, which had investigated a complaint in 2014 only to clear Nassar.Michigan State spokesman Jason Cody said the university “unequivocally denies” accusations that it covered up misconduct by school administrators. He disclosed for the first time that university police and the FBI conducted a joint investigation earlier this year to determine if any school employees besides Nassar committed crimes. The results were sent to the U.S. attorney for western Michigan, and “we have no reason to believe that any criminal conduct was found,” Cody said in a statement. “For all those involved … I’m so horribly sorry that this was like a match that turned into a forest fire out of control,” he said in a courtroom packed with tearful accusers and others. “I pray the rosary every day for forgiveness. I want them to heal. I want the community to heal.”Nassar, who lost his physician’s license in April, admitted his conduct had no legitimate medical purpose and that he did not have the girls’ consent. The 125 girls and young women who have filed reports of abuse with campus police will be able to speak at his Jan. 12 sentencing.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutThe plea deal in Ingham County calls for a minimum prison sentence of 25 years, but the judge could set the minimum sentence as high as 40 years. APLANSING, Michigan — A former sports doctor accused of molesting at least 125 girls and young women while he worked for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University pleaded guilty Wednesday (Thursday Manila time) to multiple charges of sexual assault and will face at least 25 years in prison.Larry Nassar, 54, admitted to digitally penetrating seven girls, mostly under the guise of treatment at his Lansing-area home and a campus clinic, between 1998 and 2015.ADVERTISEMENT Brace for potentially devastating typhoon approaching PH – NDRRMC Olympic gymnasts Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas are among the women who have publicly said they were among Nassar’s victims.“You used your position of trust … in the most vile way to abuse children,” Judge Rosemarie Aquilina told Nassar after his plea. “I agree that now is a time of healing, but it may take them a lifetime of healing while you spend your lifetime behind bars thinking about what you did in taking away their childhood.”She called the victims “superheroes for all of America, because this is an epidemic.”They had testified that Nassar molested them with his hands, sometimes when a parent was present in the room, while they sought help for gymnastics injuries. Several accusers were angry with his apology.“The fact that he just thinks, ‘Oh, I pleaded guilty and now you guys can start healing’ is ridiculous to me. Treatment at lowscoring hospitals may increase risk for repeat heart attack and

first_imgReviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)Mar 27 2019Heart attack patients treated at hospitals with low care scores are at greater risk for another heart attack and/or death due to cardiovascular causes, Rutgers researchers found.Their study, published in the American Journal of Cardiology, compared care scores in the New Jersey Hospital Performance Reports with one-month and one-year rates of readmission for heart attack or death due to cardiovascular causes.Researchers reviewed the electronic medical records of more than 160,000 patients at 80 New Jersey acute care hospitals from 2004 to 2015.In low-scoring hospitals, 3 percent of heart attack patients returned to the hospital for a new heart attack within 30 days. At one year, 13 percent were readmitted and about 8 percent died from cardiovascular causes.Related StoriesStudy explores role of iron in over 900 diseasesCancer incidence among children and young adults with congenital heart diseaseResearch opens possibility of developing single-dose gene therapy for inherited arrhythmiasPatients who were admitted to a teaching hospital had a 25 percent lower chance of readmission at one month. At one year, the chance of these patients suffering cardiovascular death was 10 percent lower than patients initially admitted to a non-teaching hospital. The study found a higher risk for a new heart attack and/or death among patients with conditions including acute heart failure, high blood pressure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. But those risks were reduced in patients who were treated at a teaching hospital.”Hospital performance scores have real health implications for patients who have had a heart attack,” said lead author William Kostis, an associate professor at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School’s Cardiovascular Institute. “We already knew that the scores affect patients’ choices. When asked to prioritize hospital cost or hospital safety, patients prefer the safer hospital 97 percent of the time, regardless of cost.”Kostis noted that healthcare providers can reduce the risk of death or recurrence of heart attack by calling them after discharge to assess whether they are taking their medications as prescribed.Source: https://news.rutgers.edu/research-news/patients-face-increased-risk-heart-attack-or-death-if-treated-hospitals-low-care-scores-rutgers/20190326#.XJp2N-tKiGQlast_img read more

Philippines revs up flagging green energy engine

first_img The Philippines—thanks to its spot in the Ring of Fire zone of Pacific volcanoes—has long been one of the world’s top producers of geothermal power, but years of neglect have sent the industry sliding. Now a surge of new exploration efforts are underway in a nation that has some of the world’s largest untapped sources of volcanic heat, but which relies on coal for half its electricity. “It’s an exciting development,” Enrique Nunez, the country director for Conservation International, told AFP. “In an environment where coal is king, this is good stuff”.One of the nation’s freshly upgraded plants, Maibarara, puffs out white steam from shining metal stacks on a jungle-covered hillside about an hour south of Manila.High-temperature water vapour from the Earth’s red-hot underbelly is piped to the surface where it makes power-producing turbines spin.”There is no smoke,” said facility manager Paul Elmer Morala. “Only a bit of noise, but our neighbours don’t complain.”The Philippines was for years the world’s number two, behind the United States, in drilling deep to tap the scorching hot steam. “Of course the target is to increase the existing capacity,” Ariel Fronda, head of the renewables division of the Philippine energy ministry told AFP. “There is a high degree of interest in renewables in general… Energy has suddenly become an attractive business,” he added. The Philippines’ seven geothermal fields now supply about 12 percent of the nation’s energy, with a long-term plan to nearly double capacity by 2040.The Philippines has the fifth-largest geothermal reserves, behind only the United States, Indonesia, Japan and Kenya. A growing global commitment to slow climate change led to the Philippines passing a law a decade ago to spur renewable energy investments, including geothermal energy But as the nation’s economy has boomed in recent decades, it has opted to feed its needs with cheaper and quicker-to-develop plants that burn fossil fuels. The amount of its power from geothermal sources has stayed relatively constant since 2002, while coal and gas-powered production has nearly tripled. Early in 2018 the Philippines lost its number two geothermal status, which it had held for over two decades, when Indonesia finished its massive Sarulla project. That demotion was years in the making for a country which had an initial rush of geothermal exploration in the 1970s and 1980s in response to the world’s first global oil crisis.Decades of neglect followed until a growing global commitment to slow climate change led to the Philippines passing a law a decade ago to spur renewable energy investments. Geothermal exploration wells cost up to $8 million each with no guarantee of success Though nominally free, finding the resource is an expensive enterprise, with exploration wells costing up to $8 million each with no guarantee of success.”Geothermal is that risky,” said Fronda, with the government requiring at least two wells per private exploration project in order to more accurately estimate the yield of a site. The effort to stoke up the nation’s geothermal engine largely pre-dates the arrival of President Rodrigo Duterte. However, last year he created an energy investment council that can greenlight major new projects in 30 days. A geothermal exploration effort is among the four initiatives it has approved.Though the Philippines has tumbled, it still can be an important player in geothermal, said David Livingston, a renewable energy expert with the US-based Atlantic Council think-tank.”The Philippines can serve as a catalyst for other developing nations’ interest in geothermal, particularly if its newest… programmes prove successful,” he added. ‘Geothermal is risky’The Philippine government launched in June a string of new exploration surveys, which comes on top of the roughly 10 contracts the nation has signed in recent years with power companies to drill exploratory wells. Tropical Storm Barry is slowly moving west-northwestward toward the southeastern coast of Louisiana, according to an advisory from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The storm’s center is expected to hit the southeastern coast of Louisiana, including New Orleans, tonight or Saturday (July 13) and then continue on to the lower Mississippi Valley on Sunday. It will bring “dangerous storm surge, heavy rains, and wind conditions,” across the north-central Gulf Coast, according to NOAA. (A storm surge means that there is a danger of life-threatening floods from rising water moving inland from the coastline, NOAA officials wrote.) Louisiana is currently under a federal declaration of emergency. Currently, maximum winds remain around 50 mph (85 km/hr). But there is a chance that Tropical Storm Barry will intensify and turn into a hurricane — once winds hit 74 mph (119 km/h) — tonight or early Saturday when its center strikes the Louisiana coast, according to NOAA. Some of New Orleans sits below sea level, as if at the bottom of a bowl, and is thus prone to flooding. Fourteen years earlier, Hurricane Katrina brought flooding that devastated the area. In the years following, an extensive hurricane protection system of levees and pumps was put in place, but it isn’t yet complete, according to the AP. The pumping system is working; it’s just unclear if it can pump out water faster than Barry will dump it onto the low-lying area, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell told the AP. What’s more, the Mississippi River is already at a high level from heavy rain and snowmelt; the additional water from the storm could lead to dangerous flooding, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards told the AP.last_img read more
